NHS Patient Survey reveals best and worst GP surgeries in East Lancs

The annual GP Patient Survey asked residents for their opinions on practices, measuring their experiences on a range of topics including the ease of making appointments, waiting times, the quality of care given, practice opening times and out-of-hours services.

The most recent NHS Blackburn with Darwen CCG survey saw 8,761 questionnaires sent out with 2,389 patients completing them. For East Lancashire CCG, 18,619 questionnaires were sent out with 5,903 patients completing the survey.

Brownhill Surgery in Blackburn received the highest satisfaction rating with 98 per cent believing the practice to be good or better.

Dr A Alam’s Practice in Blackburn was the lowest ranked one with 56 per cent.

A further seven surgeries, Brookhouse Medical Centre in Whalley Range (58 per cent), Shifa Surgery on Bangor Street (68 per cent), Dr N Nagpal’s Practice in Audley (68 per cent), Stepping Stone Practice in Audley (71 per cent), Limefield Surgery on Preston New Road (74 per cent), Little Harwood Health Centre (74 per cent) and Pringle Street Surgery in Blackburn (83 per cent), had satisfaction ratings below the national average of 84 per cent.

Surgeries in Blackburn with Darwen scored an average satisfaction rating of 84 per cent, which is line with the national average.

Meanwhile across the rest of East Lancashire, Slaidburn Health Centre and Kiddrow Medical Practice in Burnley, received the highest satisfaction rating with 98 per cent believing their practice to be good or better.

Daneshouse Medical Centre, Burnley, was the lowest ranked one with 53 per cent.

A further 20 surgeries, Elms Federated Practice (56 per cent), Richmond Medical Centre (63 per cent), Riverside Family Practice (69 per cent), Colne Road Surgery (70 per cent), Dr Jehangir’s (74 per cent), Whitefield Healthcare (76 per cent), The Clayton Medical Centre (78 per cent), Ightenhill Medical Centre (78 per cent), Barrowford Surgery (79 per cent), Thursby Surgery (79 per cent), Manchester Road Surgery (79 per cent), Great Harwood Medical Group (80 per cent), Reedyford Health Care Group (81 per cent), Fairmore Medical Practice (81 per cent), Dill Hall Surgery (82 per cent), Myrtle House (82 per cent), Briercliffe Surgery (82 per cent), St Nicholas Group Practice (82 per cent), St James’ Medical Centre (82 per cent) and Dr A K JHA (83 per cent), had satisfaction ratings below the national average of 84 per cent.

Surgeries in East Lancashire scored an average satisfaction rating of 85 per cent, one per cent higher than the national average.

Dr Ridwaan Ahmed, clinical director of quality and primary care at Blackburn with Darwen CCG, said: “Despite the fact our primary care teams work in one of the most challenged communities in the country with significant levels of ill health and that we additionally have lower numbers of GPs than average, their commitment and dedication has resulted in levels of patient satisfaction of 84% which is well up with the rest of the country. The CCG is grateful of the hard work and quality of primary care delivered in our practices and is trying to support them in developing new models of care to further improve access and health outcomes.”

Professor Umesh Chauhan, GP lead at the CCGs, said: “It is reassuring to hear that a high proportion of patients across East Lancashire are satisfied with their GP practice. The practices work extremely hard under increasing pressures and demand to provide quality care to their patients. We hope to continue to achieve such positive outcomes in the next survey.”
