A DRIVER crashed into a house seconds after police tried to pull over the stolen car he was travelling in.

Officers on patrol in Lower Darwen said they attempted to pull over a grey Fiat Punto in Stopes Brow at 12pm today after a man was allegedly seen not wearing his seatbelt.

It is when the police turned on the blue lights on their vehicle that the driver of the Punto crashed into a stationary Ford Transit and the front door of a house.

Police said the driver ran from the scene but was later captured. He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital with what police described as minor injuries.

A  22-year-old man from Darwen has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking and remains in custody this afternoon.

Linda Brindle, 71, who lives on Greenfield View, described the crash as 'horrendous'. Stopes Brow was closed between Aster Chase and Aintree Drive in Lower Darwen but has since re-opened.

Emergency Services are on the scene and dealing with the incident.

A police spokesman said: "At around 12pm, officers on Stopes Brow, Lower Darwen have witnessed a grey Fiat Punto being driven by a man not wearing a seatbelt.

"They have turned their car around and turned on their lights. The car then collided with a stationary Ford Transit van and a door of a nearby house.

"The driver made off but was located a short time later.

"A 22-year-old man from Darwen was arrested on suspicion of aggravated vehicle taking but was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital to be checked over. He is now in police custody."

Blackburn with Darwen Council’s roads team said on Facebook: "Traffic is advised to find alternative routes."
