POLICE and trading standards officer advised 41 workmen offering home repairs about current legislation on doorstep selling in a special roadside operation earlier this month.

Two which were seized for have no or inadequate insurance and one was confiscated for being mechanically unsound.

The results of the operation, part of National Rogue Trader Week between October 8 and 12, have been released by Lancashire County Council.

The authority's Trading Standards team worked alongside Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency inspectors and the police to carry out roadside checks in East Lancashire.

A county council spokesman said: "Trading Standards officers advised 41 traders offering domestic property repairs about legislation they need to adhere to when signing householders up to contracts in their own homes.

"Police took action against seven vehicles, including two which were seized for non or inadequate insurance and one for being mechanically unsound.

"A further 15 vehicles were given full DVSA inspection and given immediate prohibition or delayed notices."

Cllr Albert Atkinson, the deputy leader of Lancashire County Council who represents Ribble Valley North-East, said: "It's easy to carry out research if you need any work doing on your home.

"One of the best ways to search for a reputable trader is to use our Safe Trader scheme, which can help you find approved traders in your area."
