BLACKBURN ROVERS and Cardiff supporters made headlines as they made their way to a cup tie.
The rush of football fans for the match at Ewood Park became too much for the roads as traffic increased and then ground to a halt.
Many spectators arrived at the ground half an hour after kick-off.
With the number of buses clogging the way, every road around the ground was busy and car parks were full, with police struggling to get more cars to fit in.
Police officers admitted some early-arriving drivers had been selfish in their parking, leaving little room for others.
Cardiff fans arrived by noon, 560 of them in total. They were dressed in the club’s regular blue and white colours, and made their way round town singing songs.
Special buses were run by volunteers on overtime, who transported the Cardiff fans to the ground.
Transport manager Mr J Harrison was hoping the game would not run into extra-time.
He said: “We should have a strain coping with the football crowds and works specials at the same time.”
Before the ground opened, those hoping to have purchased last-minute tickets were left disappointed.
