The Heritage Trust for the North West organised Heritage Open Days, from 6th - 9th September during the National Heritage Week.
The Programme of activites included Guided Tours of Colne Town Hall on 7th & 8th September. The Building was designed by Alred Waterhouse, the architect of Manchester Town Hall. It was opened on 13th January 1894 by Samuel Catlow, the Town's first Mayor when Colne was awarded Borough status on 14th September 1895 by Royal Charter.
Outside the front entrance on Albert Road is the largest Paving Stone Flagstone in North East Lancashire, which was laid when the Town Hall was erected. Some say this Flagstone is the largest one not only in Lancashire but also in in Britain. Which claim is correct?
It weighs 2 tonnes and measures 10 feet X 9 feet X 5 inches thick and came from Clough Fold Quarry, Rawtenstall, Rossendale.
