AN 11-week-old baby was found dead at his home after falling asleep in a car seat.

Jamie Leo Smith, of St Aidans Avenue, Blackburn, was discovered by his father, Derek Roy Smith, an inquest was told.

It is believed that he fell asleep in the car seat but his parents left him so as not to disturb him and he was found sometime later.

Lynne Farnworth, coroner's officer, told the inquest that Jamie was purple and floppy' when he was found.

An ambulance was called to the address at 9am on Saturday.

The ambulance service then contacted the police.

Jamie, who was known to suffer from asthma, was rushed to the accident and emergency department at Royal Blackburn Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival, the inquest was told.

A police spokesman said: "Police were contacted by the Ambulance Service at 9am on Saturday after they had attended an address in Blackburn where an 11-week old child had been experiencing breathing difficulties.

"The child was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital where sadly he was pronounced dead on arrival.

"Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death and there are no suspicious circumstances at this stage.

"A Home Office post mortem examination took place at Pendlebury Childrens Hospital on Tuesday and the results are awaited."

A post mortem examination has been carried out at Pendlebury Children's Hospital but further tests are required.

The inquest was adjourned until a later date.
