TWO youngsters from Burnley have been shortlisted for prestigious awards and are in with a chance of winning a dream holiday to Euro Disney.

Miriam Khan and Amy Hefford have been shortlisted for awards as part of the police's Operation Summer Nights Young People's Awards.

Miriam, 17 has been shortlisted for the Exceptional Commitment Award and was nominated by PC Chris Collett for her dedication and her commitment to her community. As well as attending college and having a part-time job, Miriam also volunteers with three different groups.

She is a Lancashire Constabulary Community Volunteer, she helps with the Burnley Bears, a sports group for disabled young people, and she is a volunteer police cadet.

Shortlisted for the Back on Track Award is Amy Hefford. Amy left home at 15 under very difficult circumstances and she became involved in drink and drugs.

At her lowest point, Amy had the strength of mind to take herself to the local Connexions centre for help and managed to get into a local hostel where she got involved with the Prince's Trust.

Following a work placement, Amy will now be starting a full time job with local nursery Rascals'. Amy will also be starting college this month to become qualified as a childcare assistant.

The awards ceremony was taking place at Ewood Park today and was being hosted by BBC weather presenter, Dianne Oxberry, and presentations of the awards were being made by Deputy Chief Constable, Mike Cunningham, and Blackburn Rovers striker, Paul Gallagher.
