The cost of buying a home in the north west has gone up four times faster than the wage of the average employee over the last decade, says a new TUC report.
In 1997 the average house price was £49,000, equivalent to three years of the then average wage of £16,279, it says.
Since then house prices have risen by 157 per cent taking the average to £126,000, while the average wage has gone up by only 37.7 per cent to £22,420.
