A POLITICAL campaigner has launched a drive to give a shot in the arm to Darwen's hard-pressed traders.
Jake Berry, prospective Tory parliamentary candidate for Darwen and Rossendale, is involving more than 3,000 households in his Shop Local initiative.
Road reorganistion in the town centre has crippled some traders, with businesses along Duckworth Street among the worst hit.
Mr Berry says the scheme, where discount vouchers are offered to shoppers staying loyal to Darwen outlets, is vital in the battle against out-of-town retail parks. He said: "Many people have told me they fear that Darwen is dying - yet it needn't be this way.
"There is a wide range of shops and it's vital local people use them, otherwise we'll lose them.
"We've seen the damage done elsewhere when shops close down. We mustn't let that happen in Darwen."
The vouchers are also available from Mr Berry's office at 4 Mount Terrace, Rawtenstall, or by calling 01706 215547.
Traders taking part in the scheme include Barnes Butchers, Petals Florists, Bargain Tools and Cue Music.
