A HIT-and-run driver who knocked down a pregnant woman and dragged her along the road is being hunted by police.

The motorist then drove off, leaving the injured women, who is six months pregnant, lying in the road.

Police said the motorist's actions were "cold blooded".

She was taken to Burnley General Hospital by ambulance and treated for minor injuries.

Her baby was unhurt.

The accident happened at the bridge over the river at the junction of Colne Road and Gisburn Road at Barrowford about 5.30pm on Monday.

The woman, who has not been named but is a 22-year-old from Barrowford, was walking across the bridge when she was hit from behind by the Volvo car.

She was knocked to the floor and dragged for several yards before the car drove off towards Blacko.

Sgt Martin Bishop, of the Colne-based Road Policing Unit, said: "The lady was walking next to the bridge where there is no pavement and she was hit from behind.

"She was dragged for some distance between the car and the bridge wall before the driver turned right and headed off towards Blacko.

"Fortunately the woman only received minor injuries and thankfully her unborn baby was unhurt.

"This is being treated very seriously. It is quite shocking to think that anybody could knock somebody down and fail to stop and make sure they are okay. It is quite cold-blooded."

Police have launched an investigation and are appealing for witnesses.

The car is described as a dark blue Volvo with roof bars.
