DRIVERS caught committing motoring offences face tougher penalties under a zero-tolerance campaign being led by Ribble Valley police.
Throughout September, police officers will be out in force at hotspots around Clitheroe, Longridge and Whalley.
They will be targeting those who continue to drive whilst using a mobile phone, as well as drivers and passengers aren't wearing their seatbelts.
Fixed penalty notices will be issued to anyone caught breaking the law.
Clitheroe's community beat manager, PC Cliff Woodcock said: "Using a hand held mobile phone when driving is dangerous and illegal and I urge motorists to make sure they have the correct equipment fitted into their cars so they are not tempted to use their mobile phone when driving.
"Using a mobile phone whilst driving has been an offence since 2003 and is clearly unacceptable - not only are they putting their own lives at risk but they are risking the lives of other road users too."
He added: "Motorists should be warned that we will not tolerate this type of behaviour and we will take firm action against anyone found to be doing so."
From February 27 2007, the fine for the offence doubled to £60 with three penalty points.
