TWO men serving sentences for the murder of policewoman Sharon Beshenivsky have appeared in court charged with stabbing a murderer in prison.

Muzzaker Imtiaz Shah, 26, originally from Burnley, and Yusuf Abdillh Jamma, 21, who shot the mother-of-three during a bungled robbery in Morley Street, Bradford in November 2005, are accused of knifing Tony Piggott.

Piggott, 22, who is serving life imprisonment for a nightclub shooting in Manchester four years ago, was attacked at high security Frankland Prison in County Durham in March.

Shah, most recently of Kenton, north-west London, and Jamma, of Small Heath, Birmingham, appeared separately via prison videolink for the hearing at North Durham Magistrates' Court in Peterlee.

They faced a joint charge of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

No pleas were entered and JPs transferred the case to Durham Crown Court for a hearing on September 12.

The defendants were granted technical unconditional bail but both remain in prison because they are serving minimum 35-year sentences for murdering PC Beshenivsky.

The hearing had been due to be held last week but was adjourned because of the strike by prison officers.
