A SUPERMARKET worker who was booted off the X-Factor told the judges he was 'TV gold' after they said he couldn't sing.

Andy O'Donnell, who has worked for Asda Rawtenstall for 22 years, was told he had 'murdered' two classic songs before being given four no votes on Saturday's ITV show.

The 40-year-old, who sings karaoke and makes birthday announcements on the store's Tannoy, was disappointed not to make it past the third round after belting out Hero by Enrique Iglesias and My Way by Frank Sinatra.

The one time Paddock House School, Oswaldtwistle, pupil, said: "Simon Cowell said 'OK I've heard enough.

"Right, Andy you have just murdered two classic songs'.

"I told him he was wrong and that the 40,000 people who come into the store every week can't all be wrong.

"I have had compliments from people who have heard me sing birthday greetings and make announcements over the tannoy.

"After the show I went into a booth and told them I was TV gold."

Mr O'Donnell, of Crofters Bank, Loveclough, applied to go on the show last December and was gobsmacked when he got through to the first round.

Before the third round, presenter Fern Cotton visited the meeter and greeter at the Asda store to film him working and also took part in checkout bingo.

"After the show Fern told me she was gutted I didn't get through.

"My family is proud of how I have done and although I am disappointed I did not make it any further I won't give up.

"I'll be back auditioning because I want to pursue singing as a career."
