DIANA, the Queen of Hearts, caused a chuckle when she stepped off the train at Rosegrove Station, Burnley, in April 1986.

"Oh no, not again!" she exclaimed to the throng of Press photographers as she stepped on to a newly laid section of asphalt.

The princess explained that every time she arrived on a Royal visit by train British Rail always laid new asphalt.

"It wrecks the heels of my shoes when I sink into it," she laughed.

She and Prince Charles were greeted at the station by 5,000 well-wishers, who lined the roads above the platform.

The Royal couple were welcomed by Simon Towneley, Lord Lieutenant of Lancashire and a host of dignatories.

Princess Diana, who was wearing a fashionable maroon outfit which was tightly fitted at the waist, soon went over to a crowd of children who were waiting on the platform.

Amanda McDonald, five, of Brush Street, Burnley, presented Diana with a bouquet of flowers and told the Princess: "Welcome to Burnley, you look lovely."
