ALMOST £3,000 was raised at an all-day music festival in memory of a Darwen woman.

The Dawn's Day event, held at Marigolds in The Green, raised £2,965 for charity in tribute to Dawn Quirk who died of cancer aged 24 in February 2004.

On Sunday, bands including Darwen's Cherrybomb and Crush as well as The Two Hats, 3 Sixteen, The Soul Searchers, played at the sell-out event.

Dawn's mum Doreen, 61, said: "I think it's a brilliant amount.

"I can't thank people enough for helping, particularly Kathy and Skip at Cue Music and all the bands who played for free."

Memorial concerts and events held in memory of Dawn have so far raised over £23,000 for charities including Manchester's Christie Hospital, East Lancashire Hospice and Derian House children's hospice.

Funds have previously been raised through two music events at Marigolds in 2004 and 2006, a similar event at Uncle Jack's in Lower Darwen in 2005, a Race for Life event and a Three Peaks Challenge completed by Dawn's brother Craig, 33.

This year money will go to other worthy causes in Blackburn and Darwen to be chosen by Dawn's family.

Dawn, of Ellison Fold, died at the Christie Hospital after a nine-month battle with cancer.
