A CHARITY in Nelson is set to benefit from a fun day featuring a range of events including a fancy dress run.

The 5km Run for Life' race, organised by the Read Cricket Club, is the centrepiece of efforts to raise money for Rainbows at the Holden Centre in Barrowford and Macmillan Cancer Support.

It takes place on Saturday September 22, starting off from the Stork Hotel in Simonstone, going down Whalley Road, into School Lane and then finishing back at the hotel.

A range of family activities including games, quizzes, pool and croquet competition will also take place at the hotel.

Evening events include Play Your Cards Right, Mr & Mrs, a general knowledge quiz, a raffle and auction for autographed lots donated by the England and Lancashire Cricket Clubs, Burnley F.C. and Blackburn Rovers.

A disco will wind up the day after the money raised will be counted up and presented to the charities.

Warren Eastham, committee member and child welfare officer of Read Cricket Club, responsible for organising the event with the co-operation of Read and Simonstone parish councils, said: "The response to the fun day, in regards to donations from Lancashire businesses and support from clubs and authorities, has been overwhelming.

"This is going to be a big event for two really worthy causes that, aside from raising money, offers something fun for all to participate in."

All the money raised will be evenly split between Macmillan Cancer Support (Ribble Valley), which provides medical, emotional and financial support for those affected by cancer, and Rainbows, which provides one to one care for pre-school children with severe learning and physical disabilities in Lancashire .
