COUNCILLORS will get their first chance to discuss plans for a new community centre in Nelson a week today.
The plans for the multi-million pound scheme to create a theatre, cafe, function rooms and offices next to the newly-built Liberata building, will go before members of Pendle Council's Nelson Committee on Monday night.
Planning officers have recommended the plans for approval, despite objections from a handful of nearby residents who say the building will be over-bearing.
It is expected that the plan will be given the go-ahead, allowing work to start by the end of this year under a joint venture scheme between Pendle Council and builders Barnfield Construction.
Council leader Alan Davies said: "This is a very exciting time for Nelson and for Pendle as a whole.
"Seeing that building get under way will be a massive boost for the residents and the centre will be a valuable asset to the town in years to come.
"We have had a great response from pretty much everyone so far."
