HOUSEHOLD waste proposals have been criticised for being counter-productive in the quest to meet recycling targets.

Nigel Evans, MP for Ribble Valley, said the Local Government Association proposals for a "pay-as-you-throw" system of collecting household waste were a negative step.

He said: "Pay-as-you-throw means extra taxes on families. People who live alone, people who don't produce much refuse, may see a small decrease in council tax, but everyone knows that this would quickly be offset by Labour's stealth taxes elsewhere.

"Is it too much to ask that we have our refuse collected once a week, without being charged extra for the privilege?

"This has all the makings of a poorer service for higher taxes. I don't think people will be fooled into believing that any tax with the word "green" preceding it is going to benefit the environment." He claimed that new legislation could lead to more fly-tipping.
