After a month of football now we must find something else to do with our valuable time.
Following the national team’s exit at the hands of Croatia this week I was actually not too disappointed.
As a football man I know when our lads were beaten fair and square and whilst I would have wanted to sit down on Sunday to watch them play in the final I know it is not to be.
I do think that the team did over achieve and maybe the semi’s was the furthest we were going to get on this occasion.
I have to admit I was a little perplexed at those who seemed to want the team to lose or want us to be a little less excited. It the World Cup Semi-final – if you aren’t going to get excited about that what else is there in live for?
I realise some idiots got excited a bit too much after winning the match on Saturday but on the whole people were pretty well behaved and just happy there was something to sing about this time round.
I did get told this was an English things by one of my England football team hating friend but them I showed an article about French fans rioting after their semi-final victory on Tuesday.
What the past three weeks have shown is that Russia isn’t such a bad place after all even their government might be trying allegedly poison our citizens and prop up a dictator in the Middle East. The latter is clearly not a just a Russian trait.
It has also shown that some of the smaller countries have now got a chance to reach a World Cup Final. I was sick of seeing the same old footballing super powers in Germany, Brazil, Argentina and Italy competing in tournament finals.
If this becomes more of a regular occurrence the better.
No, football is not coming home but it come home next time and the time after that. In think I’ve got another eight World Cups in me yet. Eight more chances to get to the final.
And then our bad luck returned with a vengeance. England go out of the World Cup and the next day we have Donald Trump these shores telling us that a lot of Brits agree with this stance on immigrants.
You couldn’t make this up.
What an extremely and utterly depressing end to the week.
