WAITING times for digital hearing aids in East Lancashire are usually much shorter than elsewhere in the country, research has discovered.
An investigation by the Liberal Democrats found that waiting times for the devices varies greatly, depending on where patients live.
While the best hospitals can provide digital hearing aids in about two months, on average, others, like the University of North Staffordshire Hospital, can be more than three years.
Official statistics for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust show the average waiting time for new cases is about six months, with the same recorded for existing cases.
Nationally the average wait for new referrals is just over nine months and existing patients have to wait more than 13 months.
Preston-based Lancashire Teaching Hospitals Trust sees new cases within six weeks but those with diagnosed conditions must wait about 60 weeks.
Lib Dem MP Tom Brake, who carried out the research, said: "Waiting for up to three years to receive a hearing aid is unacceptable.
"A hearing aid can make a huge difference to the quality of life of those suffering hearing loss. The Government must act to ensure prompt access to hearing services for all who require them."
