INVESTIGATORS probing the death of a man who died after being taken in to police custody have appealed for witnesses to his arrest.

Nadeem Khan, known as Dean to his friends, died in hospital following what officers described as a violent struggle' after police arrested him in Brierfield.

Mr Khan, 28, of St Aidan's Avenue, Blackburn, grew up in Burnley and attended Towneley High School, but moved to Blackburn several years ago and became a property developer.

He had two daughters, Aleesha and Jasmine.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is appealing for witnesses to his arrest to come forward so they can piece together his final hours.

Mr Khan was arrested on Burnley Road, Brierfield at approximately 8:50am on Saturday, June 30 and taken to Burnley Police Station. He was taken ill at the station and was transferred to Burnley General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10.33am.

The IPCC is conducting an independent investigation into Mr Khan's death and said the response from the public has been good. However it is believed that some witnesses to the events have yet to come forward.

In particular investigators are keen to speak with: Anyone who witnessed Nadeem Khan being arrested outside the Modern Hairdressing Salon in Colne Road, Brierfield.

Anyone who witnessed Mr Khan's behaviour before his arrest. Information from other witnesses has revealed that Mr Khan travelled along Montrose Street, Halifax Road and Colne Road.

Naseem Malik, IPCC Commissioner for the North West, said: "The response of the public has been very good so far and we would like to thank them for the information they have supplied. The investigation is progressing well.

"However we are sure there are some witnesses who have yet to come forward and we are very keen to construct as complete a picture as possible of the events surrounding Mr Khan's arrest. We would urge people to come forward even if they do not think the information they have is important. The information they hold will undoubtedly assist us."

Anyone with information about the incident should contact the IPCC witness line on 0800 096 9078 or e-mail khan_investigation@ipcc.gsi.gov.uk.

Hundreds of people marched through Burnley last month to demand answers following the death.
