TODAY’S delve into the Lancashire Telegraph archive shows a building which was once home to three world champions, but do you remember it?

Situated in Accrington town centre, this picture taken in 1985 shows workmen beginning to demolish the former St John Ambulance Drill Hall.

The imposing brick-built hall on Bull Bridge in the shadow of the town’s famous railway viaduct, was pulled down as the town centre was remodelled when the Arndale Centre was built. It is now the site of a large roundabout.

The hall was opened in 1904 by Major General Baden-Powell, the father of the modern Scouting movement.

In more recent times the Drill Hall housed a snooker club which was the practice venue for Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins, John Spencer and Dennis Taylor who all went on to become world champions.

Do you remember the Drill Hall? Did you see the snooker stars in action? Did you ever play a frame with them? If you have any photographs you can email them to lancsnews@nqnw.co.uk
