A HISTORIC former church could be set to be turned into a home if plans are given the go-ahead by council chiefs.

Last week, the Lancashire Telegraph reported how residents had set up a group to keep St James’ Church, Church Kirk, as a community building with a meeting space and cafe.

However, Blackburn Diocese says that a potential buyer has been found.

The Ven Mark Ireland, Archdeacon of Blackburn, said: “The Diocese of Blackburn views the closure of any of its church buildings with great sadness as we are seeking to grow the number of worshipping congregations in the diocese, including ‘planting’ 50 new or renewed congregations before 2026.

“Since St James’ Church, Church Kirk, closed for public worship we have worked hard and consulted widely to find financially viable alternative uses that would involve the community.

“However, as these attempts had not been successful, the building was placed on the market and an offer has subsequently been received, subject to the granting of planning permission by Hyndburn Borough Council, for conversion to a single domestic dwelling.

“As the planning permission process is ongoing we do not wish to comment further.”

Gary Britland, who is part of the residents' group, says they will still continue to put plans in place until work is completed.

He said: “It is a long process trying to get together funding but we have had lots more people wanting to help us.

“Just because of this news, it does not mean we are going to stop.

“We look forward to working with the people who have bought it.

“It is a Grade 2 listed building so they may find it difficult to do much with it.”
