THE sale of a once asbestos-ridden factory site will enable a council to recover some the cash spent cleaning up the site.
Blackburn with Darwen Borough £110,000 cleaning up the premises in 2003 after the owner failed to act on warnings.
Now a buyer has been found for the Bleachworks in Whitebirk, Blackburn.
If the sale goes through, the council will recover some of the cash despite writing off the debt in 2009 after the owner failed to pay any of the costs back.
The borough's Executive Board agreed the sale on Thursday as it has a charge against the site.
Council finance boss Andy Kay said: "We spent £100,000 clearing up the Bleachworks .
"That was a huge sum of money in 2003 and its still a pretty big one. At least we will now get some of it back."
The site, off Whitebirk Road, was cordoned off by officials in summer 2001 after youngsters were spotting playing inside it and then demolished, but he council had to clear the site of asbestos after Environmental Health notices were ignored.
