I have always been intrigued by two of the gravestones at the church.

There are two with elaborate stone carvings of ships' anchors on them.

One is the grave of Theophilus Clarke who died in September 1893 aged 38 and the other is of James Simpson who diesd in 1907 aged 46.

They both must have had strong connections with the sea to have such detailed naval carvings. Can anyone shed any light on their naval past? Did they die at sea?
