A CRAFTSMAN at work! Today’s delve into the Lancashire Telegraph archives has unearthed this photograph of stonemason Bob Buist at work in Blackburn Cathedral.

Bob is pictured putting the finishing touches to a decorative ball carved out of a single block of stone as part of restoration work which was underway at the cathedral in 1989.

Bob was employing the same skills which the original masons would have used when the parish church of St Mary the Virgin was built in 1926. The creation of the Diocese of Blackburn a century later saw the church being upgraded to cathedral status.

It is believed that a place of worship has stood on the site in Blackburn town centre since Norman times.
