THE site which housed a public bonfire display in a park has not been cleaned up, almost three months after the event.

Thousands of people gathered to watch the bonfire and fireworks display at Towneley Park on November 5 last year.

The event also saw a children's bonfire display, a funfair and programme of live entertainment and music.

However the site has not been returned to its former state and pieces of wood, plastic and debris have been left on the churned land.

Maureen Frankland, part of the Friends of Towneley Park group, said: "The park has several wonderful things going on inside it and we have so much to boast about.

"We have had a lot of heavy rain recently which causes the ground to get very wet, you could look at lots of areas of East Lancs in this way.

"The ground will return to normal as soon as the rain water dries up.

"We have a park to be proud of and something like this should not be the image people have of our park."

It was revealed last year the park is set to have around £100,000 spent on it in the next eight years, with improvements made to the Towneley Riverside playground.

Plans to build an overspill car park containing 40 extra spaces was given the go ahead last year to be used at up to 50 attractions a year.

A Burnley Council spokesman said: "We will restore this site to its former condition as soon as practically possible.

"The site is too wet over winter, as you can see from the photos, to do anything with it at the moment.

"Once it dries out in the spring we will clean it up and re-seed it with grass.

"This is the same approach we took last year.

"In the meantime we have fenced off the site to protect the public and dogs from potentially injuring themselves on any sharp objects left over from the bonfire that could still be embedded in the ground."
