A MOTOR dealer who knocked more than 1.5million miles off the clocks of used cars in East Lancashire has been jailed after failing to pay back the £180,000 he was ordered to do so by a judge.

Haroon Sheeraz Chaudrey, 45, made £250,000 from the scam in which he sold the cars on to unwitting buyers through the trade press and Autotrader websites.

Earlier this year he admitted being involved in clocking 14 cars, knocking an average of 90,000 miles off the odometer readings between March 2011 and April 2014.

For that, Judge Graham Knowles ruled Chaudrey must hand over his full assets or face two years in jail.

And after failing to do that Chaudrey was jailed for a total of 26 months at Liverpool Crown Court last month.

He was back before a judge at Burnley Crown Court this week to be sentenced for a single count of knowingly being party to the carrying on of a business for fraudulent purposes between May 14, 2015 and September 23, 2015.

But the case, which has been brought by Lancashire Trading Standards, was adjourned to allow Chaudrey to get legal representation. The court had heard that Chaudrey’s previous representatives David Norman Solicitors had withdrawn their services because he had not paid them.

Asking for an adjournment from the dock, Chaudrey said: “I would like legal advice. I have always paid for my legal representation privately. It would be the same firm. They do have some insight of what was going on.”

Judge Jonathan Gibson adjourned the case until January 29 to allow Chaudrey time to sort out his legal representation and to apply for legal aid if necessary.

He said: “I understand adjourning the case will result in further costs for the prosecuting authority. At the end of the day Mr Chaudrey’s liberty is at risk. I will give him the opportunity to be represented.”
