TODAY’s photograph from the Lancashire Telegraph archives sees one of East Lancashire’s major sporting facilities nearing completion in 1990
The distinctive curved roof gives a clue to the building as do the banked tiers on either side ready to be fitted with seats.
Vans and workmen were still on what would become the playing surface of Blackburn Arena, which would become home to Blackburn Hawks ice hockey team.
The arena was officially opened in January 1991 by Olympic champions Jayne Torville and Christopher Dean.
The arena was earmarked as a potential venue to host boxing had Manchester successfully bid for the 1996 Olympics.
Over the years, the arena has hosted professional wrestling events and even a concert by Status Quo as well as being a popular venue for skaters. Some of the country’s top ice stars have trained there.
