A GRANDFATHER has been left with a fractured pelvis after falling from his bike when it hit a pothole.
Colin Jackson was cycling with a friend on Sunday when he fell from his bike in Back Lane between Newton and Slaidburn.
As reported in the Lancashire Telegraph last week, villagers have already warned there could be serious accidents if the potholes are not filled in.
Mr Jackson, 65, from Clitheroe, said the pair had been trying to avoid the potholes and he was travelling slowly when he fell.
The father-of-two, who is a member of Clitheroe Bike Club, said: “I got stuck in one of the potholes and it just flipped me off.
“I struck the floor head first but luckily I had a helmet on. My hip took the impact.”
The engineer was taken home by a passing motorist but struggled to get out of the car.
“I was thinking I would get into a hot bath and I would be alright in a few hours but after sitting down for an hour I could not get up. My wife phoned 101 and they said call an ambulance.”
Mr Jackson was taken to Royal Blackburn Teaching Hospital and an X ray confirmed he had a fractured pelvis. He is now waiting for an operation and could be in hospital for weeks.
He said he understood it had been reported to the council that the road was in a bad condition in August.
“Unfortunately with the current financial circumstances the roads are not repaired anywhere near as quickly as they should be,” he said.
He said: “In some areas there are potholes covering the full width of the carriageway. It was in a shocking condition.”
A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: “Repairing Back Lane is a high priority and will be put forward for consideration as part of our capital repair programme for 2018/19.
“Our teams will inspect the roads around Slaidburn again to see if any urgent or temporary repairs need to be made.”
