School’s Mission/Vision statement: Whatever the challenge we aim high with God in our hearts
TEACHERS spoke of how young Asiya’s enthusiasm and sense of humour are ‘sure to brighten up even the bleakest day’. The judges loved that line, but they were also deeply impressed to hear about Asiya’s perseverance and positive attitude to everything she does, despite having a Global Delay diagnosis.
On hearing she had won the award, Asiya said: “Asiya is extremely happy… I won. Yeah! Asiya is a good girl, I work hard, I am kind and I am funny.”
Her teachers, including Miss Agar, also spoke of the 11-year-old’s boundless enthusiasm for life.
“We are all delighted that all Asiya’s hard work has been recognised in such a special way. This award reflects everything we already know about Asiya; she is always positive and tackles all challenges with boundless enthusiasm. Well done Asiya,” said Miss Agar.
Inclusion manager Belinda Lalsing said: “Asiya puts 110 per cent into everything she does.
"She listens well to instructions, works hard and no matter how difficult she finds a task, she will persevere. Every day she lives out our school values, ensuring our class is an even happier place to be.
"She is always polite. Asiya will enquire how people are feeling; she has deep empathy for people.
"She is very kind and considerate towards others especially the younger children in the school. In addition, Asiya has an inquisitive mind and although she finds some aspects of the curriculum challenging she always adopts a positive approach. In fact her attitude and enthusiasm are inspiring.”
Asiya is a prefect and a PAL and manages to lead and encourage purposeful play with younger children, despite her limitations.
“Asiya will leave a lasting impression on the heart of anyone she meets and is a fantastic ambassador for St Stephen’s School,” said Belinda. Head teacher Mrs Young added: “I am delighted for Asiya to win this award as she is a great success story for inclusion at St Stephen’s bringing a lot of joy to all those who know her in school.”
