A MAN has been taken to hospital with burns to his face and hand following a serious building fire.

The incident happened at a farm in Edgworth and saw firefighters from Darwen and Greater Manchester sent to tackle the fire at around 6.30pm yesterday.

It is not clear how serious the man's injuries are following the incident on land off Edge Lane.

A spokesman for the fire service has said the cause of the fire is under investigation.

When firefighters initially received the call witnesses reported hearing loud bangs from gas cylinders exploding.

The building is said to have housed farm vehicles, a car and a camper van.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus tackled the fire using hose reel jets.

Firefighters were at the scene for around two hours and also had to tackle isolated pockets of fire.

A fire service spokesman said: "The building on fire housed farm vehicles, a car and a camper van. The firefighting response was a fire engine and crew from Darwen and three engines and crews from Greater Manchester Fire Service.

"A man with burns to his hand and face was taken to hospital by ambulance.

"Firefighters set up a water relay from a remote water source and used hosereels and jets to extinguish the fire, damping down subsequently to dowse remaining isolated pockets of fire.

"The cause of the fire is being investigated."
