PART of an explosive shell was found by children playing by a disused railway line. Two 11-year-olds uncovered the timing mechanism by the former Padiham branch line, Green Lane, Padiham.
They walked into the town's police station with the device at 6.30pm today (Monday.
The mechanism, contained no explosives and was put in a bucket of sand as a precaution and kept in a concrete cell overnight.
Bomb disposal experts were due to visit the police station on Tuesday to ensure the device was safe.
