FIREFIGHTERS were called out to tackle a suspicious barn fire in Worsthorne.
Two fire crews battled the fire in The Square, Worsthorne, for more than 15 minutes yesterday afternoon but had to remain on site as potentially explosive gas canisters were discovered.
The fire caused severe damage to the ground floor, moderate damage to the first floor and the tiles on the roof had to be removed to make the building safe.
Firefighters spent two hours making the barn safe, removing and cooling a number of LPG cyclinders from the barn, which could have exploded.
Watch manager Peter Ashworth said: "The barn was well alight when we arrived and the fire had spread from the ground floor to the roof.
"We spent two hours there because there were LPG cyclinders which were a risk to the firefighters and these could have exploded.
"We cooled the cyclinders and got them out of the building.
"We are treating the fire as suspicious. It seems it was lit by someone deliberately."
