FINAL designs for the £1million investment in Accrington's market hall are to be completed by the end of the year.
Hyndburn Council has spent the last five years exploring ways to develop the historic Victorian building in the heart of the town so that it meets the demands of modern shoppers but still retains its traditional charm.
The renovation would allow the market to continue operating for the next 15 to 20 years.
Last year, hundreds of signatures were collected by traders after fears were raised that the council was planning to sell the market to an independent company.
This was denied by the council and it recently announced it is now in a financial position to commit to the £1million funding needed to ensure the redevelopment project can go ahead.
Initial design work will begin over the summer and a major design consultant team will be appointed by the autumn.
Plans for the new look design should be available by Christmas.
Building work will commence in late spring 2008, with hopes that all the necessary work will be completed in early 2009.
Leader of the council, Coun Peter Britcliffe said: "The market is the jewel in Accrington's crown.
"It is a key shopping facility within the town centre and an important and vibrant part of the retail and leisure mix for the local community.
"It also plays a significant role in attracting visitors to the area.
"We are really pleased that things are now moving forward."
Once plans have been drawn up market traders and the public will be invited to comment on them.
The council's cabinet is expected to authorise the expenditure, matched by grant, today.
