A SCHEME aimed at promoting the importance of street markets has won the backing of football legends and MPs.

This week is National Markets Week and Clitheroe market has been backed by Ribble Valley Conservative MP Nigel Evans.

He joins ex-England forward Gary Lineker - the son of a market trader - who has thrown his support behind the campaign.

Organised by the All Party Group on the Markets Industry, the aim is to highlight the importance of markets strengthening communities and providing healthy food at cheap prices.

Mr Evans will visit Clitheroe market on Saturday at 11am to talk to traders, sample local produce and serve behind a stall.

More than 200 MPs nationally have agreed to visit their local indoor, outdoor, farmers or specialists markets sometime during the week.
