A PRIMARY school has come up blooming after vandals trashed a garden planted by the children.

Youngsters at Sacred Heart RC Primary School, on Colne Red Lane, Colne, have planted flowers, herbs and vegetables to replace ones destroyed by the wreckers.

Pupils were left heartbroken when a a £300 polytunnel, which sat above the growing area, was smashed and plants were pulled out during the attack in May.

Headteacher Peter Cunningham said: "I am really impressed with the way the group has not allowed the vandals to stop them.

"The kids were determined not to let the vandals win and we now have fennel and lettuce growing in the polytunnel, as well as vegetables and strawberries. Each class is looking after the garden and seeing the fruits of the seeds they have sown."

Parents have been invited in to the school to help with the planting scheme, which is the culmination of work by the children and volunteers from the Colne Horticultural Society.

Mr Cunningham wants to mirror parts of the Eden Project, Cornwall, in the school over the next year.

He is hoping to put in plants from around the world and trails for the youngsters to follow.

Mr Cunningham said: "This has been a fantastic success and the fruits of it are wonderful.

"Over the next year we want to make the outside of the school a working area and we want areas where we have different shrubs from all around the world.

"We want to mirror some of the work they are doing at the Eden project, but in Pendle."
