QUARRY operators are urging people to stay away from dangerous sites during the hot summer months.
Warm weather is a particular factor in increased levels of trespassing at the 22 quarries across Lancashire.
The Quarry Products Association has launched its Play Safe Stay Safe campaign to put across the message that quarries are not places to play.
Lynda Thompson, chair of QPA, said: "Quarries can sometimes be a natural magnet for some people who dont understand the hazards that can await them.
"They are safe places for work and have a vital role in our world but they are not playgrounds.
"It is all too easy for an afternoon's fun to turn into an unexpected tragedy."
Quarry companies ensure they inspect their quarry fencing and warning signs as a priority. Many operators are visiting schools and youth groups to spread the safety message.
Hazards include deep and cold water and piles of sand that could collapse if children dig tunnels in them.
Safety advice is available from the website below which also offers an online quarry tour.
