DRINKERS in Colne look set to be huddled at doorways if they want a cigarette.
Councillors have given the thumbs-down to new beer gardens and terraces at town centre pubs, after two planning applications were submitted ahead of the smoking ban, which comes into force on July 1.
Members of Pendle Council's Colne and District Committee said the plans for outside drinking at the former King's Head Hotel, Church Street, and at the Union Exchange, Market Street, would lead to increased in anti-social behaviour and noise.
Residents' objections meant Wetherspoons had to back down over plans for a beer garden and outdoor terrace, submitting new plans before Thursday's meeting.
An application for a terrace and beer garden to be built at the back of the Union Exchange was deferred, but councillors said this was only to give enough time to strengthen the case for refusal.
