A LONG-running scheme to improve the canal towpath running through Pendle is near completion.

Work has started on the final stages of covering the path alongside the Leeds to Liverpool Canal in a bid to attract more tourists to Pendle and improve the area's economy.

The Mayor of Pendle, Allan Buck, helped out when he started work on the final two stages between Foulridge and Salterforth and Skipton Road and Greenberfield Locks, Barnoldswick.

Executive member for resources, Councillor David Whipp, said the cost of the final phases was £230,000 and the scheme overall was more than £600,000.

He said: "Previously the towpath was a muddy mess in places.

"The prime aim was to improve the towpath for cyclists, for families with prams and so people with wheelchairs could also use the towpath.

"It is one of the things we are doing to generate more visitors to Pendle who will spend more money in bed and breakfasts in the area."

Money for the latest scheme has come from Pendle Council, regeneration body, the North West Development Agency, and West Craven Together, the organisation set up to improve the area.

The work should be completed by the end of the week depending on the weather.

The council also wants to create a number of landmarks in the borough along the canal particularly between Brierfield and the Bradley and Whitefield areas of Nelson.

Coun Whipp said councillors had received positive feedback about the improved towpath.

He added: "The work has been going on for a number of years.

"It will stand up to the wear of tear of cyclists and other pedestrians using the towpath.

"It has been very well received and people who use the canal for leisure are over the moon."
