A man who carried out a glass attack in a Blackburn pub which left the victim's lip hanging off has been jailed for a year.

Victim Scott Melia, refused medical assistance and seemed more interested in getting another drink, a court was told.

At a sentencing hearing, allegations were made that he had earlier made the life of defendant Darren Leecy a misery by using violence and aggression.

Leecy, 37, who had been living at Oakenhurst Road, Blackburn, pleaded guilty to an offence of unlawful wounding.

The incident at the Sun Hotel pub, Astley Gate, Blackburn, on May 23 last year.

Miss Alex Simmonds, prosecuting, said when police went to the pub, Mr Melia was found to have a nasty injury where part of his bottom lip appeared to be hanging off. He also had a large cut to the upper lip.

"He was extremely drunk and didn't want to talk to the police. An ambulance was called.

"He refused medical assistance and seemed intent solely on getting another drink from that pub or another."

Following his arrest, Leecy told police the other man had made his life a misery. He said at the time he had forgotten that he had a pint glass in his hand.

The court was told that Leecy had 79 previous offences on his record. These included several convictions for actual bodily harm assault and two for wounding.

Mr Dennis Watson, prosecuting, said there had been a single blow with an unbroken glass.
