By: David Bartlett PARENTS have been told to keep their children in check after the second stone throwing attack on a train in a week.

A train from Blackpool South to Colne had to be taken out of service after it was attacked between Burnley Central station and Brierfield on Thursday.

The incident followed another attack on Tuesday in which a train driver suffered a broken bone in his face after his train was stoned in Carleton, near Blackpool.

It also came after youths sat on railway lines outside Cherry Tree station, Blackburn and refused to move when a train approached.

Parents were warned after that silly stunt' to make sure their children kept off the lines.

No-one injured in the latest incident but police warned that it could very easily have been more serious.

A spokesman for Northern Rail said services had resumed to normal after the attack.

A spokesman for British Transport Police said: "Usually it is youths that in dulge in this type of thing.

"So we would appeal to parents to emphasize the safety message as they are putting their own safety at risk and that of rail passengers and rail workers.

"I'm not sure young people fully understand the consequences of throwing things at trains.

"The incident at Blackpool just goes to show what can happen, but these incidents can be fatal if things like bricks are thrown."

He said attacks on trains usually increased during light summer nights.
