WORKMEN are to be given free crime prevention kits in a bid to reduce the number of vehicles being targeted for expensive tools and electronic equipment.
A mutli-agency action group has been set up to tackle vehicle crime in Hyndburn.
Hyndburn Community Safety Partnership, made up of officials from the police, council, fire service and other agencies, has been delivering a number of initiatives which have contributed to the overall reduction in crime.
However, the CSP has noted a steady increase in vehicle crime and the action group has been set up to combat this.
This group will initially focus on raising awareness in the building trade, which is the worst hit by thieves.
CSP chairman Brian Roberts said offenders were focusing on vans with high-value electrical items such as satellite navigation systems and vehicles that have power tools left in the back.
He said: "The theft of power tools from vans is a cause for concern and so we are asking owners of vans to ensure the vehicles are locked at all times and high-value items removed.
"We are asking everyone to take responsibility for there own possessions by keeping them safe and secure".
The group is offering advice to motorists, with posters and flyers available at builders and plumbers yards, electrical wholesalers and other retail outlets used by workmen.
Free crime prevention packs, which include a property marking pen and window sticker, will also be available.
