A BRAVE son has told of his joy at returning home 10 months after a horrific holiday accident that left him paralysed.

And Adam Wood, 21, of Lime Road, Haslingden, said he was most looking forward to spending time with his son Brandon, two.

Adam was in Ibiza with a group of friends in August last year when he fell into a fountain and broke his spine. He had been on the island just over six hours.

Adam broke two vertebrae and had to have three operations in Ibiza.

Friends and family raised more than £15,000 to bring Adam, who had no travel insurance, back to the UK by air ambulance in September.

He spent time at the Royal Blackburn Hospital, before moving to the specialist spinal unit at Southport Hospital, where he has undergone intensive physiotherapy to rebuild his strength.

It had been feared Adam would never regain his ability to speak. Nurses at Southport Hospital said his fierce determination had got him through the treatment.

Yesterday he finally returned home from hospital to the delight of his family.

Adam said: "I've got used to the fact that I'll never walk again.

"The only thing that bothers me is that there are things I won't be able to do with my son.

"But if you're never going to walk there's no point getting depressed about it. You've just got to get used to it.

"At the moment I'm just concentrating on getting back to my life. It's going to take time and I've got to get adjusted to everything."

Former bricklayer Adam told how much he was looking forward to spending more time with Brandon.

He said: "Brandon's coming over at the weekend and I can't wait. I couldn't see him at Christmas because I was in hospital and it's going to be brilliant being with him.

"It's going to be great just being normal again and being able to do whatever I want to do instead of being stranded in hospital.

"I'll be going out for a good few pints and spending a lot of time with my family."

Adam said he could remember nothing of the accident - only waking up in hospital.

He spent his 21st birthday in a hospital bed, so his family is planning a belated celebration now he is home.

And he paid tribute to the support he has received.

He said: "I'm just really grateful to everyone.

"My family have been great and everyone did loads of work getting the money together and getting me back to the UK and I can't thank them enough for that.

"It was hell in Ibiza but once I was back I could see my family more."

Mum Jeanette, 46, said the past months had been a struggle, but she was delighted to have her son home.

She said: "It was awful when he was still in Ibiza but we've been working towards this day for a long time now.

"We didn't think he'd be back until July but he's done really well with all the physio and I'm really proud of him."

The leftover cash from the £15,000 raised will be spent on a state-of-the-art wheelchair for Adam, as well as adaptations to his home.
