ORGANISERS behind a £100million super racecourse' planned for East Lancs have said they are not worried about a rival scheme announced for Salford.

The consortium back-ing a course planned for 317 acres of land around Simonstone and Read is putting together an application which will include business and leisure facilities.

But this week plans for a £100million race-course complex in Worsley and Boothstown, shelved in 2004 after public outcry, have been resubmitted to Salford City Council, and include a 6,000 seat grandstand, 18-hole golf course, country hotel and equestrian centre.

The Marquess of Zetland, owner of Red-car racecourse and chairman of the East Lancashire consortium - which includes Russian and Middle Eastern backers as well as from the UK - said that he was not worried about the potential competition.

Lord Zetland said: "Whatever these plans are, it won't affect our approach. There is no point fretting about competition. We shall carry on and hopefully do really well.

"If the Salford group think they have a good scheme then good luck to them. If there are two really good operations 20 minutes away from each other, it would be a great boost for the North West, and can often make better business then being further apart."

The team hopes to submit a planning application for outline permission for Simonstone in nine months' time, with a decision expected four months later.
