A MOTORIST has been killed in a collision on a notorious road in East Lancashire.
Leon Paul Atkinson, 24, of Burnley, the driver of a black Peugeot 106, died in the crash on the A59.
The accident happened outside the Bay Horse pub in Longsight Road, Osbaldeston.
Fire brigade, paramedics, police and the air ambulance, were called to the scene in which three vehicles collided at around 12.20pm.
Police believe the driver pulled out of a junction into the path of oncoming traffic. It is not thought speed was a factor.
The fatal smash is the second in the area in recent weeks.
Ashley Connell, 23, of Knowsley Road, Wilpshire, was killed when the Honda Civic Type R he was travelling in collided with walls in Mellor Lane.
His four friends are now recovering from the crash, which traffic police believe was at least partially caused by speed.
Insp Chris Hayhurst said in the latest collision a Peugeot, a Toyota Auris and a skip wagon collided opposite Abbot Brow, Osbaldeston.
Gary Douglas, 32, of Mellor Lane, Mellor, parts manager of Bay Horse garage, a Saab dealership, went to the scene.
Mr Douglas, who is also a special constable in Accrington, said: "We were with the driver of the Peugeot.
"At that point he was groaning and drifting in and out of consciousness.
"It felt like an age until the emergency services arrived.
"I was just trying to keep talking to him. It was difficult to get to him because the car was crushed.
"His arm was trapped behind his head.
"I was talking to him and pinching his ear and trying to get a reaction.
"I was asking 'what's your name?' and 'where are you from?' but I wasn't getting any response from his eyes.
"I was trying to give some CPR to him but nobody had any oxygen.
"The fire brigade arrived first and straight afterwards the ambulance. Then the air ambulance arrived."
Insp Hayhurst said: "It's really for us to try to work out what happened but three vehicles have been involved.
"The driver of one of the hatchbacks died as a result of the crash.
"We believe that he was coming out of the road on the right of the Bay Horse and has pulled out in front of oncoming vehicles.
"The driver and passenger of the Toyota were taken to Queen's Park Hospital with slight injuries.
"The driver of the HGV was also taken to hospital but was discharged."
Three Saab vehicles at the nearby Bay Horse garage were also damaged by flying debris caused by the crash.
