POLICE and the fire service are investigating a deliberate fire in a disused commercial building.
Fire crews fought the blaze at the rear of Appleby Street, Nelson, for an hour.
Watch manager Mark Woodward said the fire, which started on the first floor of the two-storey building, quickly spread to the rest of the building when wood stored there caught fire.
Equipment from Burnley and Blackburn was called in.
Four fire engines attended on Thursday at 4.20pm after there had been 20 calls from residents. Mr Woodward said: "The crews did an excellent job stopping the fire spreading to the nearby houses.
"The fire was stared deliberately on the first floor and investigations by the police and ourselves are continuing."
