LEARNER drivers have been finding out about the dangers of taking risks on the road as part of a council-led safety scheme.

The six-week driver-training Turning Point' course, in Burnley, has been hailed such a success that organisers are now running a further three courses across the borough. Turning Point' is part of a new Burnley Road Safety Action Group programme designed to highlight the dangers of poor driving.

Kaye Mahoney, Burnley Council's neighbourhood area worker, said: "This project is about giving both young drivers, and pedestrians, peace of mind through aiming to avoid the terrible consequences bad driving can lead to."

Hussnain Ishfaq, who attended the course, said: "We have learnt a lot. We now know the effects of dangerous driving, what speeding can cost, and feel that we will now be safer drivers."

The training, delivered by Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service and Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety, also included sessions on car maintenance, and drug awareness.
