A POLICE officer has been suspended and another placed on restricted duties following a fight which left a teenager with facial injuries.

Burnley police arrested two off-duty officers after an alleged assault on a 17-year-old man in St James's Street outside the JJB store.

The teenager, who is from Burnley, is believed to have suffered a bloody nose and a chipped tooth in the alleged incident.

Both officers, who work for Greater Manchester Police, were arrested on suspicion of assault and a public order offence and have been bailed to return to Burnley police station on Monday, May 7.

A Lancashire police spokesman said that the incident had occured in the early hours of Good Friday, April 6, in St James's Street, Burnley.

He said: "It is claimed that shortly before 2am, a 17-year-old local man was assaulted receiving a bloodied nose and chipped tooth following an altercation with two other men.

"Two men aged 24 and 29 from the Greater Manchester area were both arrested on suspicion of assault and a public order offence.

"Both have been released on police bail pending further enquiries."

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said that an internal inquiry was also underway.

He said: "Our internal affairs branch has been informed and is monitoring the criminal investigation.

"One officer has since been suspended from duty and the other placed on restricted duties, pending the outcome of the inquiry."

One officer is from East Middleton and the other is from Rochdale.
