A pedestrian was seriously injured after he ran across the southbound carriageway of the M66 near Stubbins last night.
Shortly after 8.10pm, the driver of a HGV travelling on the inside lane saw a man on the hard shoulder by the side of the motorway near junction one, police said.
The driver attempted to move out into the second lane, but the man appeared to run onto the carriageway and collided with the HGV, police said.
The man received multiple injuries in the incident and was taken to Fairfield Hospital for treatment. His condition is critical.
No-one else was injured in the incident, although the driver of the HGV was left deeply shaken.
The carriageway was closed while an investigation was carried out. All lanes were re-opened at around 10.45pm.
The injured man is described as in his mid-20s and of mixed race, wearing a long-sleeved white shirt with pink and blue vertical stripes.
Anyone who witnessed the incident, or saw the man on the hard shoulder prior to the collision, is asked to call motorway police on 0161 856 1550.
